Italian film director Franco Zeffirelli dies at 96 "Franco Zeffirelli, one of the world's greatest men of culture, passed away this morning," tweeted Dario Nardella, mayor of Florence. "Goodbye dear Maestro, Florence will never forget you." The Florence native directed stars including Elizabeth Taylor in the 1967 film Taming of the Shrew and Dame Judi Dench on stage in Romeo and Juliet. Italian media said Zeffirelli died after a long illness which had grown worse in recent months. The two-time Oscar nominee also served in the Italian senate for two terms as a member of Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party. He is perhaps best known to many as the director of the 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet – starring a then-unknown Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. It was viewed by generations of school students studying the Shakespearean drama. The illegitimate son of a merchant, his mother gave him the surname "Zeffiretti" – meaning "little breezes" – which was misspelled on his birth certificate. The original meaning came from a Mozart opera – and Zeffirelli would go on to become a prolific creator of opera himself, staging more than 120 in his career. Zeffirelli's first film was also a Shakespeare adaptation, of The Taming of the Shrew. While initially intended to star two Italian actors, but was heavily funded by Hollywood couple Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor – who eventually assumed the two leading roles. Another notable adaptation of the bard's plays would come in 1990's Hamlet – starring Mel Gibson in the title role, with Glenn Close and Helena Bonham Carter among the supporting cast. How a fig tree helped to identify a slain Turkish Cypriot: This is the story of a slain Turkish Cypriot man who helped his family find his body with a fig seed in his stomach that grew into a tree. The Committee on Missing Persons in Cypus (CMP) has been searching for 2,002 people who disappeared on the divided Mediterranean island between 1963 and 1974. The CMP has identified and returned the remains of 890 people to date. The CMP was launched in 1981 by an agreement between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities under the auspices of the United Nations. The committee was tasked with the mission of preparing a list of missing persons and learning the fate of those people. One of those missing persons was a United States citizen. Since the U.S. government wanted to know the fate of the U.S. citizen, the committee shifted its focus to identifying and returning the remains of the missing people to their families. Blood samples were collected from relatives who also gave information regarding the clothing they were wearing at the time of their disappearance. Hip-hop star Rick Ross was hospitalized in Florida early Thursday after being taken ill at his Miami-area home, police in Davie, Fla., confirmed.   Police and emergency teams were called to his home after he was "found unresponsive," according to a dispatch report filed by police and sent to USA TODAY. The report showed a 911 caller sought help for a man fitting Ross' description "in distress" who was breathing heavily, "slobbing out the mouth," and briefly combative. Davie police had no other information because the call to Ross' home turned out not to be a law enforcement matter, said Sgt. Mark Leone, spokesman for Davie police.  There were conflicting media reports on whether Ross' condition was heart-related or respiratory-related or both. TMZ reported sources connected to the music mogul (real name William Roberts II) said he was hooked up to a machine controlling the function of his heart and lungs.    A hip-hop artist named Fat Trell posted on his Instagram that he just talked to Ross in the hospital but he was not on "life support."
